About Us

Our story, mission, vision, and the values that guide everything we do.

Who We Are

The Prodigal Sons House is a faith-informed nonprofit organization based in Selma, Alabama, registered under EIN 81-1014384. We serve individuals working to overcome substance abuse, personal crisis, unstable housing, and the long-term consequences of broken relationships and destructive life patterns.

Our name draws from the parable of the prodigal son — a story of return, forgiveness, and second chances. We believe that no matter how far someone has strayed, there is always a path back to a life of purpose, dignity, and hope.

We are more than a shelter. We are a transitional bridge for individuals seeking long-term sobriety, personal restoration, and successful reintegration into family, work, and community life.

Community Context

Selma, Alabama is a community with deep history but also significant social, economic, and public health challenges. Poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, family crisis, housing instability, and limited access to mental health services are closely interconnected issues.

The Prodigal Sons House is a community response to these needs. We fill the gap between the moment an individual leaves treatment, incarceration, homelessness, or a toxic environment and the moment they can truly stand on their own in society.

This transitional period carries high risk. Without support, many people return to their old environment. That is exactly where an organization like ours makes the difference.

Our Core Values

Compassion

We approach every participant with empathy rather than judgment. Each individual is seen as a person with dignity, not merely a sum of past mistakes.

Accountability

Recovery demands responsibility. Participants are encouraged to take ownership of their choices, behavior, words, finances, relationships, and future.

Restoration

We believe in the possibility of healing, rebuilding, and growth. Recovery is not just about ending a negative behavior — it is about becoming a healthier person.

Faith

Spiritual foundation helps participants rediscover hope, forgiveness, and life purpose. We serve with a spirit of Christian compassion, emphasizing mercy and human dignity.

Community

We see community as essential to lasting change. Participants not only receive support but also learn to support others, creating a cycle of mutual encouragement.

Dignity

We work to restore a sense of self-worth for those who have been hurt, failed, or pushed to the margins of society. Every person deserves to feel valued.

Our Recovery Philosophy

We believe recovery is not just ending a negative behavior — it is rebuilding an entire life.

People Can Change

The past is not a final sentence. A person who has struggled with addiction, made mistakes, or failed can still be restored if given the opportunity, environment, and commitment.

Recovery Requires Community

Very few people can overcome addiction or crisis alone. They need companions, accountability partners, encouragers, and a community that does not abandon them.

Discipline is a Form of Love

An effective recovery environment needs clear rules. Lasting freedom often begins with relearning discipline, responsibility, and healthy boundaries.

Faith and Hope are Sources of Strength

For many, recovery is not just a behavioral issue but a spiritual one. The belief that one is forgiven, loved, and has a new purpose can become the foundation for change.
